Governors
School Governors are essential for the effective management and development of our school. They work within the framework set by both national legislation and the policies of the local education authority. Governors have a range of statutory responsibilities including:
Helping to establish the school’s strategy, appointing the head teacher, overseeing the financial performance and supporting and challenging the school leaders.
Above all else, they ensure that the school provides a safe environment for all pupils and staff.
The Governors meet at least twice a term and have general responsibility for the effective management of the school but in practice, they delegate the day to day running of the school to the head teacher. The Governing Board operates under a structure of committees and working groups to provide focus on the main issues. Currently these are:
- Finance and Resources
- Standards and Curriculum
- Safeguarding, Ethos and Well-being
The Governing Body consists of elected parents, a local education authority nominee, foundation governors, parish council representatives, elected teachers and a number of co-opted governors elected for their particular skills and experience. Typically these might include: finance; premises management; staffing; marketing; pupil welfare; and curriculum development. As such, every School Governor has opportunities to make valuable contributions to the success of the school and, at the same time, broaden their own skills and knowledge. Governors get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the school, understanding the challenges it faces, and are directly involved in setting appropriate priorities for improvement. Wherever possible, they engage regularly with staff, pupils and parents and respond quickly to their views and suggestions. Parents can raise any concern with a governor at any time, although it is usually more appropriate to contact the head teacher in the first instance.

Julia BeavenDeputy Head
Julia Beaven
My name is Julia Beaven. I trained as a teacher at Kingston Polytechnic in the 1980s and worked in London at several primary schools in Tower Hamlets and Islington before moving to Hertfordshire in 1995. I taught in Hertford for 10 years and moved to Benington Primary school in 2007. I started off working 2 days a week, as my children were both still in primary school themselves, and I have gradually increased both my hours and responsibilities.
I am now Deputy head and coordinator for both English and science as well as being the deputy designated safeguarding lead. I absolutely love working at our wonderful village school and I am proud to have been part of everything that we have achieved in the past and excited to see the school grow to meet the challenges of the future!

Laura Burt
Laura Burt
'I am an experienced Governor having been involved in two other governing bodies for 8 years in Stevenage and act as a Chair of Governors on one of the Governing bodies. By profession I am a Chartered FCIPD in HR and work within the Pharmaceutical industry. I have a child in junior school, and one in secondary school, and for me the role of governor is so crucial to ensuring the correct running of the school, providing strategic leadership and supporting the team, all with the aim of ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to thrive. Both of my children are diagnosed SEN, and so for me the SEND provision in schools is a personal passion, ensuring equity in opportunity and celebrating each unique child for what they bring to our school community
