RSHE & PSHE

Curriculum Rationale

Relationships education is learning the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.

Health education is learning about physical health and mental wellbeing to give them the information that the children need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

Sex education is learning about the facts of human sexual reproduction. We use Twinkl to ensure coverage and progression in RSHE and PSHE.

Intent:

To help pupils to aspire to be the best they can be, to have dreams for their future and know what is required to reach them.

Implementation:

To meet the needs of all pupils with their diverse experiences – including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Impact:

The pupils’ attitude, behaviour and demeanour around school, within lessons, at playtimes’ and out in the community demonstrates the respect, tolerance and high aspirations that our pupils have of themselves and each other.

Relationships & sex education (RSE) and health education (RSHE)

Relationships Education

Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online. Your child will be taught what a relationship is, what friendship is, what family means and who can support them. In an age-appropriate way, your child’s school will cover how to treat each other with kindness, consideration and respect.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • families and people who care for me
  • caring friendships
  • respectful relationships
  • online relationships
  • being safe

Health Education

Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.

By the end of primary school, pupils will have been taught content on:

  • mental wellbeing
  • internet safety and harms
  • physical health and fitness
  • healthy eating
  • facts and risks associated with drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • health and prevention
  • basic first aid
  • changing adolescent body

Sex Education

Sex Education is not compulsory until Secondary school. At Benington school we teach this in Oak Class. A meeting is held with parents to share the lesson plans and resources that will be used to teach Sex Education.

The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued under this new curriculum. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up.

You can find further detail by searching ‘relationships and health education’ on GOV.UK.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. PSHE links closely with the values programme in our school. All of these support our social, moral, cultural and spiritual (SMCS) education. At Benington we have created our own programme to equip our pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions, whilst respecting others beliefs.

Our pupils learn British Values – democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. An example of this is at the beginning of the school year all pupils create a set of rules that they all agree with. Other examples are found across the curriculum, particularly within PSHE lessons.
